Michael Edwards has agreed to return to Liverpool to oversee the post-Klopp era

Former sports director Liverpool Cheap Football Jersey Michael Edwards has confirmed his return to the club, where he will take over from Jürgen Klopp as head of football operations.

Edwards recently met with executives from Fenway Sports Group, the company that owns Liverpool, in Boston to discuss the details of his new role, and confirmation of his appointment is expected soon. The 45-year-old Edwards, who turned down an offer from FSG to return as sporting director in January, will take up a senior position such as head of football operations.

Edwards’ immediate task will be to appoint a new sporting director – Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes is the favourite for the job – and to get Klopp’s successor as Liverpool manager. The main favourite is Xabi Alonso, the former Liverpool midfielder who led Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga.

FSG made a concerted effort to retrieve Edwards, who had left Liverpool Children’s Football Set after ten very successful years in 2022 and turned down a number of offers from other clubs. He worked as a consultant at Ludonautics, a sports consultancy founded by former research director Liverpool Women’s Football Jersey Ian Graham.

Bournemouth recently announced that Hughes will leave at the end of this season after ten years in its recruitment team. He has held the position of technical director for the last eight years and led the appointment of Andoni Iraola as head coach last summer. The former midfielder met Edwards when he played for Portsmouth, where the latter was working as a performance analyst, and confirmation that he will take up the job is expected shortly.

FSG has been seeking a permanent sporting director since Julian Ward announced his departure in 2023. Jörg Schmadtke served as an interim appointment to assist Klopp in rebuilding Liverpool’s midfield last summer, but left at the end of the January transfer window.
