Bayern pulls players out to take the blame when they have a poor record

After eight and a half years with Monchengladbach, Sommer joined Monchengladbach's arch-rivals Bayern Munich in January. The move drew plenty of criticism from Monchengladbach fans, but for Sommer, the criticism wouldn't stop in Bavaria.

In an interview with the Swiss media during the International Match Day, Sommer spoke about his time at Bayern: "I know how Bayern operates. When results are bad the team 'picks' one or two players to zoom into the media spotlight, then two new players, and then it's my turn to be picked, but I don't want to defend myself publicly."

Filling in for injured Bayern captain Neuer is destined to be a daunting task for any keeper, but Sommer revealed that there are other issues plaguing the club: "I've had an extremely crazy situation at Bayern. Layoffs, changes, a lot of turmoil and all sorts of topics outside of sport."

Despite this, Sommer was still quite impressive in front of the Allianz Arena goal, making a number of great saves that ultimately helped the team pick up points. Without Sommer's ability and experience to step in midway through the season, it is hard to imagine Bayern winning the Bundesliga title for the eleventh consecutive time with Dortmund pushing them.

Still, Sommer noted that the criticism he received during his time at the club did affect him: "Of course, it can be unpleasant at times, but it doesn't destroy you completely. The most important thing is that I try to perform and help the team to succeed. Fortunately, I did that in the end."

Sommer left Bayern this summer to join Inter and is currently trying to help the team win the Serie A title this season.
